Finestrat, because of its geographic location, has sheltered numerous civilizations over the course of history. The archaeological remains from the Upper Paleolithic and the Iberian and Roman cultures illustrate that Finestrat dates back to the year 1289, when Peter III, the son of James I the Conqueror, granted the Municipal Charter to the locals.
Finestrat, having a quite pronounced Morisco in uence, re ect the special charm of Mediterranean villages in the peculiar structure of its streets and archaeological remains.
These places are worthy of being visited because of their history or the natural environment that surrounds them: El Castell, La Torre, hermitage of Santíssim Crist del Remei, the Church of Sant Bertomeu and La Font del Molí.
La Cala de Finestrat, formed by a lovely bay, is naturally protected from the noise of the surrounding cities. The local government, being aware of the natural treasure that have, has taken a really good care of it. These efforts have led to getting steadily since 1988 the Blue Flag distinction.
